To Our Customers,

Metropolitan Storage first opened its doors in 1894 and my family has proudly owned this business since 1972.  We have worked hard over the last 43 years to provide the highest level of service and create a customer experience second to none.  Therefore, it is with great regret that I must inform you Metropolitan will be closing its doors and going out of business.  The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Metropolitan’s landlord for the last 43 years, has decided not to renew our lease so it can use the building for its own purposes.  Each customer has been sent a certified letter formally terminating your storage contract. The date of termination is set forth in your letter. The last termination date and the date by which all customers must vacate their unit is January 29, 2016.

We understand that you did not anticipate having to relocate your storage and this may present you with a wide variety of challenges.  We will help you relocate your storage and will work with each customer individually as necessary to assist you in this process:

 Recommended Storage Provider

  • We have arranged for Extra Space Storage, located at 41 Norwood St. in Dorchester (adjacent to the Southeast Expressway), to rent you a similar size unit at the same price for most customers.

  • Prices will be guaranteed without any increase through December of 2016.

  • Extra Space is a brand new, state of the art, climate controlled facility. It is well lit, has indoor loading docks, extended hours, accepts credit card payments and has top of the line security and access systems.

  • You can sign Extra Space’s storage agreement at the Metropolitan office.

  • While Extra Space has hundreds of available rooms, it is not as large as Metropolitan and unfortunately does not have enough rooms to accommodate all Metropolitan customers. Therefore, rooms will be rented on a “first come first served” basis. Space is limited! Please do not delay in contacting us to make your arrangements.


Recommended Movers, Additional Coordination & Problem Solving

  • Our recommended movers will offer discounted rates for Metropolitan customers that are moving to Extra Space’s Norwood Street facility.

  • It is highly recommended that you be present for your move. However, if your presence is not possible, you can authorize your movers to accept the condition of your goods and sign out Metropolitan’s contract on your behalf.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank all of you for your patronage.  We have an extraordinary number of customers in their second, third and fourth decades of storing at Metropolitan.  Our oldest customers date back to the 1930’s and 1940’s.  To our long term customers, our customers who have been with us for only a few years and to those of you who have been with us for only a few months, thank you!
